MAD ABOUT MAX
I was very satisfi ed with the list of the
100 best movies you selected in the
February issue. Basically, all my
favourites are in there but, most
importantly, I also agree Mad Max:
Fury Road was the best, most
innovative, bravest movie...maybe not
in the past century but defi nitely in the
past 10 years.
VAL, VIA EMAIL
Yep, George Miller’s 2015 sci-fi classic
was a contentious selection for our No. 1,
but there’s absolutely no doubt that it’s
a tremendous fi lm.

A FAMILIAR RING
I couldn’t argue with the top 10 in your
100 best movies list. I’m not sure I’d have
them in that order, though, as I’d probably
put Lord Of The Rings: The Fellowship Of
The Ring at No. 1, but that’s because I’m
a major Frodo-head.
BERNIE, ASCOT PARK, SA
It’s all subjective, but LOTR certainly
makes a good case for owning that top spot.

AUSSIE? AUSSIE? AUSSIE?
The 100 best movies list disappointed me
greatly – where was the Australian
representation? How could there be no
love shown for the likes of Rabbit-Proof
Fence, Moulin Rouge! and These Final
Hours? Shame on you, voters!
JODIE, HARRIS PARK, NSW
You can’t please everyone, which is why we
love making these lists. That said, all three
fi lms you mentioned were great and worthy
of a top 100 spot.

THE YEAR...
I fi nd it hard to believe women are still
being treated like we don’t go to the
cinema [“Once Upon A Time In...2019”,
January]. The section headlined “The year
...female audiences came out for Hustlers”

Writers this

Arctic Justice

A PROUD ‘EMPIRE’ READER!
G’day, Empire. In preparation for another kid the missus began turning the
study into the baby’s room over summer. To be fair, she said I could have
the home offi ce out the back. Turns out it’s the perfect place to store my
collection of Empire magazines going back to 2003, and get some peace and
quiet when a new issue arrives in the post. Best of all, I used the posters from
the past 15 years to truly own the space. Keep printing them and we’ll keep
reading them.
ANGUS, HAMPTON PARK, VIC
That’s a study to be proud of, Angus. In fact, we’re feeling quite jealous right
now. Oh...and congrats on the impending bundle of joy.

really hit a nerve. Like, I hope, many
other serious movie-goers we can agree
the past few years were terrible for fi lm
with countless sequels, remakes and so
forth. I found myself going to the cinema
less and less, but I still managed to try to
get to the important ones like Joker. Yes,
I saw Hustlers but not because it was an
all-female cast. It simply looked better
than most of the other nonsense that was
out there. Hollywood needs to wake up
and realise that women go to the movies
just as much as, if not more than, men.

We see a wide and diverse range of
fi lms that most men would snicker at
because society still says it’s a “chick
fl ick” so why bother. So thanks for
addressing that Hollywood’s theory
is, in fact, wrong. I just hope we can
start the decade with an even mor
evolved view that women love
movies just as much as everyone
else does.
MELANIE, VIA EMAIL
Hollywood is slowly changing for
the better. It’s long overdue.
