cerebral hemispheres. The diencephalon, a structure located between
the base of the cerebral cortex and the midbrain, consists largely of
the thalamus and hypothalamus. The medulla, pons, and midbrain
are collectively called the brainstem. Some definitions of the human
brainstem also include all or part of the diencephalon. And some defi-
nitions include the cerebellum.
