CHAPTER 2 1

Emotion

In the film 2001: A Space Odyssey, astronaut Dave Bowman, with
some difficulty, is able to regain entry to the spaceship, despite HAL’s
efforts to prevent that from happening. Once inside, Bowman makes
a beeline for HAL’s control circuitry, intent on shutting HAL down as
quickly as possible and gaining control of the ship and the mission.
HAL: “Just what do you think you are doing, Dave? I really think I
am entitled to an answer to that question.”
Is HAL upset, angry, confused?
HAL goes on to speak in a conciliatory manner: “I know everything
hasn't been quite right with me. But I can assure you now, very confi-
dently, that it’s going to be all right again. I feel much better now. I re-
ally do.”
HAL continues: “I can see you are really upset about this. I know
I’ve made some very poor decisions recently. But I can give you my
complete assurance that my work will be back to normal. I want to
help you.”
Finally, HAL implores: “Dave, stop. Stop, will you? Stop, Dave. Will
you stop, Dave? I’m afraid. I’m afraid, Dave.”
Fear?
