regular taxes.^119

A different quota system existed to the south in Fengtian that was not

based on sable pelts, primarily available only much farther north. There

were fewer equivalents and a much wider range of forage with specified

quotas. Equivalents were specific to some forage categories: two otter cubs

the equivalent of one adult or a sea eagle equivalent to two storks. Rewards

were expressed in terms of silver taels for salmon, for example, with an

award of 0. 2 of a tael for everyfivefish over quota. Shengjing’s“honey

raisers,”probably beekeepers, were also rewarded with money.^120
