A new take on a tale as big as all outdoors
FAMILYDoes a dog harbor a deeper instinct to forsake dry food and run
with wolves? Apparently so, according to the Jack London nature
classic, although this adaptation muddies the issue by using CGI
animals. The effect is ungainly at times but works when the script
requires the dog, named Buck, to do something that would be classi-
fied as supra-canine: He even figures out how to urge a grizzled loner
(Harrison Ford) to lay off the sauce. Good boy! (Feb. 21, PG)

TV | Better Call Saul
Being sleazy isn’t all that easy
DRAMAIn the Breaking Bad universe, evil’s toxicity registers slowly
and incrementally: It’s Adam taking endless nibbles from the
apple instead of one big damning bite. In season 5 of this excellent
Bad spinoff, attorney Saul (Bob Odenkirk) is offering free phones
to potential clients—plus a 50 percent discount for nonviolent
felonies. Quickly surrounded by lowlifes, he’s starting to connect
with the Jesse Pinkmans of the world. (AMC, Feb. 23, 10 p.m.)
