Before Pretty WomanÕs 1990
release, director Garry Marshall,
who loved making romantic
comedies, took a dark script
about prostitution and over-
hauled it into what would
become one of the most memo-
rable romances in movie history.
It would also make 21-year-old
Julia Roberts very famous.
“Richard [Gere] knew Julia was a
star launching into the universe,”
says the late director’s daughter
Kathleen Marshall. Still, the
pairing nearly didn’t happen—
Gere, then 40, turned down the
role of financier Edward multiple
times until Roberts persuaded
him to say yes. “I pleaded with
him in a real way!” Roberts once
told People. For the film’s 30th
anniversary the cast and crew
shared behind-the-scenes dish.
