Toll of abuse

on shop staff

MORE than 400 shop staff
suffer violence or abuse
every day – with a rise in
weapons a worrying trend.
Findings from a British
Retail Consortium survey
show cases of violence are
up 9% on the previous year.
Major triggers are theft,
intoxicated customers and
enforcing age restrictions.
Despite £1.2billion spent
on crime prevention,
losses climbed to £1billion.
Helen Dickinson, BRC
chief executive, urged
“tougher sentences”.
