Floods crisis:
MPs unite as
No10 ‘failing
to get a grip’
LABOUR and Tory MPs
have blasted the Govern-
ment for its failure to get a
grip on the flooding crisis.
Shadow Environment
Secretary Luke Pollard
accused No10 of trying
to “silence” communities
after it blocked Labour’s bid
for an independent review.
Mr Pollard said: “Every
Tory MP that votes against
our motion... they’re
refusing to listen and learn
the lessons of the flooding.”
Tory Craig Whittaker
criticised the speed of the
Government’s payments to
flood victims, but voted
against Labour’s motion.
OVERRUN
Andrew Percy was the
only Tory to back the
motion, despite accusing
the party of trying to “score
cheap political points”.
The Brigg and Goole MP
said he represented “the
most flood-prone constitu-
ency in the country” which
is still dealing with “
million gallons” of water.
He added: “What we
need now in my constitu-
ency is immediate funding,
into the future, to look at
what we can do for the
defences that have been so
overrun on this occasion.”
Environment Secretary
George Eustice accepted a
need for more investment
in defences and a
com mitment to tackling
climate change.
He said: “We are deter-
mined to be ready for the
future and we must expect
more frequent extreme
weather in this country.”

Keir shrugs off attack over donations
f UnDs Keir Starmer
KEIR Starmer has resisted
pressure from rivals to identify
all of his donors ahead of the
Labour leadership election.
The frontrunner insisted he is
sticking by party rules.
But other candidates in the
race to succeed Jeremy Corbyn
say they have gone further.
Rebecca Long-Bailey has
called for greater transparency
from Mr Starmer’s bid but he
criticised this line of attack.
He said: “How can you say I’m
hiding behind process when it’s
the party process.”
Lisa Nandy is also running to
replace Mr Corbyn.
Voting closes two days before
the new leader is announced
on April 4.

‘ignored

claims’
Boris: I’m sticking by her
show of support by sitting beside her
in the Commons.
Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn
called on him to release the findings
of the Cabinet Office probe.
He said: “A government cannot be
judge and jury over its own conduct

  • there has to be an independent
    element to that investigation.
    “We have a part-time Prime
Minister who barely turns up but is
determined to cover up for bullies.”
Ms Patel could be forced to give
evidence under oath to an employ-
ment tribunal launched by Sir Philip
Rutnam. He quit as Home Office

Permanent Secretary at the weekend,
accusing her of bullying and vowing
to sue for constructive dismissal.
The case involving alleged bullying
of the aide at the Department for
Work and Pensions then emerged.
A third claim involved Ms Patel’s
time as international Development
Secretary, during which she allegedly
harassed and belittled her private
secretary so badly he was signed off
with stress after six months.
Ms Patel denies bullying and her
allies claim “disturbing dark forces”
are trying to get her sacked. A Home
Office spokesman said: “[She] cate-
gorically rejects these allegations.”
Civil service chief Sir Mark Sedwill
may be grilled on Ms Patel when he
faces the Commons Public Adminis-
tration Committee next week.
The Tory Party was approached for
comment yesterday.

TORY chiefs ignored bullying
claims against Home Secretary
Priti Patel, the Mirror has heard.
The Government handed a former
aide to Ms Patel a £25,000 payout
after she claimed she was bullied by
the then-employment minister.
And we have been told she also
complained to Tory Party HQ, but
received no response.
Legal notes, seen by the BBC, allege
the woman took an overdose of
prescription medicine after a 2015
incident involving Ms Patel.
The Home Secretary faces a
Cabinet Office probe on claims over
treatment of officials in three depart-
ments during her ministerial career.
Labour yesterday accused Boris
Johnson of “covering up” bullying
and said it had received fresh allega-
tions about Ms Patel from Govern-
ment staff in the past 24 hours.
But the PM said he was “sticking
by” Ms Patel and put on a public sUpport PM gives Ms Patel backing
