Boozers wine

at ‘sexist’ tax
Wine drinkers are urging
Chancellor Rishi Sunak
not to raise duty on plonk
in next week’s budget –
claiming the tax is sexist.
Some 39% of women list
wine as their top tipple
while just 16% of men love
it, tax-cut campaigners
Wine Drinkers UK say.
Joe Fattorini, of iTV ’s
Wine Show, said: “One
group is disproportion-
ately penalised – women.”
A £5 bottle of wine has a
44% or £2.23 duty charge.
Beer drinkers pay 14% or
54p on a pint costing £3.79.

all welcome The club

A bowlS club is finally to
allow women to become
members for the first time in
its 96-year history.
The decision was taken in a
ballot of members, in which 25%
of voters objected to the move.
Until now, women were not
offered full membership of ilkley
Bowling Club, West Yorks.
They could also only access the
bar at certain times and then only
as the guests of male members.
The rules banned women from
entering the drinks area from
Monday to Thursday every week
or before 5pm, Friday to Sunday.
The club’s vote was carried out
at a general meeting after
chairman Alan Breese told

members it was “time to air the
subject”. Out of 1,700 current
members, 506 took part in the
ballot, with 129 casting against
and 377 for the proposal.
Around 15% of the club’s active
players are women.
The subject of female members
was last addressed seven years

ago, when members voted against
the proposal.
Women were already permitted
to play bowls at the club, which
was founded in 1924 and has
mixed gender teams.
Club member Peter Mate
posted on Facebook: “Personally,
i find the current situation unac-

ceptable. it is sad that we had to
go to these lengths, and made a
laughing stock out of the club by
having to go public in this way.
“The Club should be open to
all, with families etc... [it] needs to
be brought into the present day.”
