Clare Balding hosts daily coverage of
this, the doggy Oscars, live from the
NEC in Birmingham.
As ever it’s a glorious four days for
dog lovers as our pedigree chums
compete in categories such as agility
and obedience.
And every breed is represented,
from great Danes and St Bernards to
tiny little handbag-sized pooches.
Today’s theme is Which Dog Is
Best for Me and My Lifestyle? We’ll
also see highlights from events

including Flyball and Heelwork to
Music. Clare meets Scarlett Moffatt
from Gogglebox to find out why she’s
visiting Crufts, and some WWE
wrestlers pick their favourite dogs.
The programme will bust some
common Crufts myths. And there
are discussions on dogs that save
lives and dogs in mental health.
There’s also some advice on how
to buy a puppy based on breeds
suited to particular personalities,
and dog welfare and healthy
breeding is explored.
It’s simply the best doggone show
in town.

Prepare for some extreme nail-biting
tension as this modern-day take on
the HG Wells classic – penned in 1897 –
hits our screens.
With a critically-acclaimed cast,
including Gabriel Byrne and Elizabeth
McGovern, this is the famous story of
total global disaster.
It’s all eerily calm at first, but we
know a storm is coming.
Astronomers are working at an
observatory deck in France. They have
been beaming out music into space
and now, suddenly, they are hearing a

weird signal, with a bizarre frequency.
Is it what they think it is? Time to
make that all-important call: “We
believe we have detected evidence of
extraterrestrial life.”
Everything very quickly goes wrong
after that.
The world’s population waits for
further contact with bated breath but
within days, cue global panic, running
and screaming...
And after the attack, only pockets of
humanity are left alive in an eerily
deserted world.
This is a hugely tense, well-told saga
of epic proportions.

Colouring our judgement

BBC1, 9pm
A GRIPPING and shocking story
of racism, social divide, love and
power, this series reveals an
alternate world that looks all
too familiar.
Based on Malorie Blackman’s
award-winning young adult book
series, it begins by telling us that
more than 700 years ago the Aprican
Empire invaded Europe.
Aprica colonised and reached as

far as Albion – the name for what we
know as Britain. Albion has been
under Aprican rule ever since.
In London in the present day,
Callum McGregor ( Jack Rowan) is a
Nought, a white member of the
underclass.
Sephy Hadley (Masali Baduza) is a
Cross, a member of the black ruling
class and daughter of Home Secre-
tary Kamal Hadley (Paterson Joseph).
There are shocking opening scenes
as two black police officers arrest

some white youths for no
apparent reason, calling
them the derogatory term
“blanca”, with Callum’s friend
Danny being brutally
attacked and hospitalised.
It’s the 10th police
brutality this year and the
Noughts are outraged.
Meanwhile, Helen Baxendale plays
Callum’s mum Meggie. She’s house-
keeper to the home secretary and
tells Callum and his brother Jude to

do nothing about the attack.
Instead, she wants them to
help out at Sephy’s mum’s
birthday party.
At the party, Sephy and
Callum meet for the first time
since they were children and a
spark ignites.
There’s a Romeo and Juliet feel to
the story as two young people from
families across a social divide seek to
be together. And there’s danger at
every turn in a world ruled by fear.
