Clifftop photography Shooting from a clifftop literally
gives your images a different perspective to shooting
from the shore. Too many photographers head straight
to the beach and get low using a wide-angle lens for big
foreground interest, but shooting from a clifftop conveys the
coast so much better. Looking for a clifftop vantage point is
not the easiest thing to do but when you find a good area that
has waves crashing in, or sea stacks and arches to shoot
down upon, it can make really powerful pictures. The coasts
around the UK offer a wealth of spectacular views.
The best time to shoot from the cliffs is in late spring and
early summer when they’re covered in wildflowers, as this is
usually the only time that they are. That being said, I’m a firm
believer that you don’t need foreground – I more than often
look straight into the distance and out to sea and find the
viewpoint is enough to create an interesting picture. I almost
always shoot from clifftops with a polariser attached as it cuts
through reflections on water to give a greener sea and
punchier pictures. At sunset, look for a clifftop that will be
side-lit by golden light and, ideally, with another viewpoint
close by that lets you shoot into the sun at sunset.
