Coastal close-ups Pebbles on a
beach, interesting shells or a family of
limpets on a rock all have the potential
to make good close-up images, as do
interesting patterns in the sand from where the
tide pulls back. If you’ve got an eye for
close-ups, there is so much on a beach to
shoot and you don’t need a macro lens; you
just need anything but a wide-angle lens.
I generally use a medium-range zoom like
the 24-70mm at 70mm, or a telephoto such as
the 70-200mm at 70mm. It might mean I have
to negotiate my crop so not to include my feet
or the feet of my tripod, but it means I don’t
need to carry gear I wouldn’t normally have
with me on the off-chance of being inspired.
While overcast days are good for revealing
detail and colour in close-ups, you can utilise
high-contrast light too by looking for areas
that play with light and shade for more graphic
black & white abstracts.
