I needed to get the
knowledge as soon as
possible so I studied at
night – in fact, in the
beginning, I didn’t even
know what a DSLR was
studioflash with a 120cm Octobox and
handpainted backdrops. Her studio is,
however, enviably flooded with natural light
from floor-to-ceiling windows that act as
her alternative light source for Rembrandt
or butterfly lighting – the two set-ups she’s
carefully perfected over the years.
Paulina’s portraits of children and family
aren’t to everyone’s tastes – she recalls
how photographers brutally criticised her
images online damning them as ‘sulky
children’ – but these select few clearly miss
the point of her portraits. Her approach is not
