Start on left with number given and follow instructions as you go across. In 30 seconds, beginners have to
complete their own challenge; intermediates have to complete their own challenge and the beginner’s;
advanced players have to complete their own challenge and the intermediate’s. SOLUTION BELOW
North opened 1♦, and raised his partner’s
1 Nt to 2Nt. Your partner leads ♠2, dummy
plays low and your queen wins. What next?
Defence becomes great fun when you are able to
play detective, and assemble the clues which enable
you to defeat a contract.
In this instance, you have a mass of information
available from the bidding, the lead, and dummy. ♠ 2
is a fourth best lead, which means that declarer has
concealed a 4-card spade suit with his 1nT response;
he also has a minimum 6-7HcPs or he would have
raised to game, and he won’t have four diamonds or
he would have supported partner.
A quick calculation tells you that partner must
therefore have 9-10HcPs (including ♠K). You can
also see that dummy has six certain winners, and
you’ll gain the lead once more with ♦K.
You’ve now worked out that partner is marked
with honours in clubs, so you must attack in this
suit now, rather than passively returning partner’s
suit or exiting with a heart. The question now is
which club to lead, and we’ll see the full
deal tomorrow.
