His all-conquering team

Another frustrating

Calamitous mistake to let

cesar aZPIlIcUeta 6.5
Chelsea skipper was
involved in a good tussle
with Origi. The defender
won the battle.

Neco WIllIaMs 6.5
Not overawed by the task
of trying to shackle
Pedro. Showed bundles
of composure.

aNtoNIo rUdIGer 7
Eased his way back into
the groove after starting
draw at Bournemouth on
the bench. Dominant.

Joe GoMeZ 6
Fit again but looked
uneasy as he tasted
domestic defeat for first
time since January 2018.

kUrt ZoUMa 6.5
Lacked composure at
times but on the whole
a sturdy performance
from the defender.

VIrGIl VaN dIJ k 6.5
Hardly broke sweat but
could not inspire his
team, as he so often
does, on a tough night.

Marcos aloNso 7
Had his hands full trying
to keep tabs on Mane,
but stuck to his task
diligently.

aNdy robertsoN 6
Fully occupied by Willian,
who helped keep the
Scot’s impact in attack to
a minimum.

FabINHo 5.5
Usually so assured but his
sloppiness on the edge of
his own box led to
Willian’s opener.

adaM lallaNa 6
Tried his best to inspire
Liverpool. Continued to
break through the lines
but to no avail.

bIlly GIlMoUr 8
Produced a performance
way beyond his 18 years.
Full of composure and
vision. A big future.

Mateo koVacIc 7
Worked tirelessly for his

Easy to see why his
manager adores him.

cUrtIs JoNes 5.5
Clearly a talented kid but
the game passed him by.
Has a big future,
nonetheless.

sadIo MaNe 6.5
Liverpool’s biggest
threat but could not
break down a resolute
Chelsea defence.

takUMI MINaMINo 5.5
Still trying to pick up the
pace of English football.
Plenty of work-rate,
little quality.

WIllIaN 7
Looked embarrassed to
celebrate his goal. It was
reward for his industrious
display. Limped off.

ross barkley 7.5
Forced Fabinho’s mistake
for Chelsea’s opener and
scored a brilliant goal.
Pleasing night.

Pedro 6.5
A threat down the left
and didn’t shirk his
defensive duties at the
other end.

dIVock orIGI 5.5
Cut a frustrated figure in
attack before being
subbed as Liverpool
chased the game.

olIVIer GIroUd 6.5
Kept his place in Tammy
Abraham’s absence.
Unspectacular but played
an important role.

Klopp: Two massive mistakes cost goals

players and you can’t do that in the
living room at home.’
Klopp’s seven changes to the side
who lost at Watford included giving
starts to youngsters Neco Williams
and Curtis Jones, as well as fringe
players Adrian, Adam Lallana and
Takumi Minamino.
‘Losing 2-0 is not good,’ the
manager added. ‘But it’s easy to
explain. We made two massive
mistakes around the goals.’
Despite being virtually assured of
winning their first league title in 30
years, Liverpool have now lost three
of their last four matches in all
competitions — failing to score in

three of them. ‘It’s more easy to
explain when you win than when
you lose,’ said the German.
‘I have no arguments against the
numbers. Everyone can interpret it
as they want. I know the number
and it’s not cool.
‘We don’t want to concede and we
want to score more. But we’re not
100 miles away and the boys are
strong. Usually you don’t get a lot of
chances against us but now we have
to admit in the last four games we
conceded too many goals.
‘I’m not worried about momentum.
We never thought it would be easy.
We have done very well but tonight
was not good enough and that is
what we have to accept.’

Scouser Barkley said: ‘It was
brilliant, a massive result. Scoring
against Liverpool is a dream for me,
supporting Everton and having
played for them. But getting into the
next round is the main thing.’
Lampard, whose side join Arsenal,
Newcastle and Sheffield United in
the last eight, said: ‘It’s hard to be
comprehensive against Liverpool;
they remain in the game because of
the team they are.
‘But we can’t ask for any more. The
spirit, the work ethic, the quality.
You’ve got to defend really well to
keep a clean sheet against them.
What a team they are. And we
defended with everything, played
well and deserved to win the game.’
