TIGERS: HUNTING THE
TRAFFICKERS
BBC2, 9pm
From footage of frozen tiger cubs in
freezers at a breeding facility in Laos,
to tigers held in high-security holding
pens in Thai zoos, and caged tigers
fattened in a dark basement in
Vietnam to be killed and cooked to
order - this is a shocking exposé.
With figures estimating that there
are less than 4,000 tigers left in the
wild, Royal Marines Commando Aldo
Kane investigates the secrets of the
illegal tiger trade in South East Asia

and those who profit. While
highlighting the plight faced by the
species, there’s a look at how tiger
farms drive consumer demand for
tiger products, fuelling the illegal trade
and poaching.
Some communities covet illegal
products such as tiger-bone wine and
tiger-bone glue, which are believed to
have medicinal values in parts of Asia,
mainly in China and Vietnam.
From tiger wine breweries to small
backyard holdings, Aldo covertly films
tiger traffickers, shedding light on a
worrying and upsetting underworld.

mISSING Les
Vegas doesn’t
return from
pedalo trip

SANdYLANdS
GOLD, 10pm
If you like bold, brash, end-of-pier
comedy such as Benidorm or
Scarborough, then this will probably
tickle your fancy.
As the title suggests, it’s a seaside
sitcom boasting a “cast of colourful
locals”, most of whom might make
you cringe.
It does have a great cast, including
Sanjeev Bhaskar, Sophie Thompson,
David Walliams, Simon Bird, Craig
Parkinson and Hugh Bonneville, all
having what looks like a riot on set.
As this begins, amusement arcade
“King of the Strip” Les Vegas

(Bhaskar) goes missing, presumed
dead, on his pedalo.
His estranged daughter Emily
(Natalie Dew), who swore she’d never
return to her neon-lit childhood
town, is summoned back to attend
his memorial service.
But there are plenty of
unexpected encounters for Emily,
not least oddball B&B owners Derek
and Jeannie Swallows (Walliams and
Thompson), nightclub owner Terry
Chino (Parkinson), a mysterious
one-eyed man (Bonneville) and her
former crush Nathan Wild (Bird).
Continues tomorrow and
concludes Friday.

could have led to his release from prison.
The Dingles are far from impressed with
Charity.
But the bombshells are not over for
Marlon. He is then stunned by a further
revelation that Kim may have hired
someone to kill Graham.
Elsewhere, Tracy is pleased when Cara

THE TRoUbLE WITH
mAGGIE CoLE
ITV, 9pm
THIS is the strangest thing – a prime-
time drama that doesn’t involve mur-
der, detectives or some devastating
tragedy. Well, not yet anyway.
In a break from the normal misery, this
light series is a gentle, amusing look at
what happens when gossip rocks a small
community. Sticks and stones and all that.
With vibrant characters in a tight-knit
coastal village, plus beautiful scenes shot in
Cornwall, it doesn’t seem a coincidence that
this airs not long after Doc Martin ends.
Dawn French is the titular Maggie Cole.
And it’s pretty obvious from the off what the
“trouble” is with Maggie.
She’s a busybody who just loves to gossip.
In fact, she’s quite an unlikeable character,
only improved somewhat by her lovely
husband Peter, played by the brilliant
Mark Heap.
The first episode spends some time
setting the scene in the small commu-
nity of Thurlbury. Maggie is a local
historian who is absolutely thrilled
to be asked to do a radio interview
to celebrate the village’s 500th
anniversary.
But after a few gin and tonics
during the interview, she shares
some gossip about some of the
local residents.
Then she gathers the entire village
together for a garden party so
that they can all listen to the inter-
view, oblivious to what is about
to play out.
Awkward doesn’t quite cover it.
This has a great cast, including
ex Corrie star Julie Hesmondhalgh,
Patrick Robinson and Vicki
Pepperdine.
And while this opener is fairly
predictable, there’s a sense that the
“storm in a teacup” is about to
become more of a hurricane...
