said: “this is a great
fight. you only have to
look at his resume to
see he’s always
been considered
as one of the most
fearsome punchers
in the heavyweight

TOUR CHIEF DIES AT 40
By MiKE WalTErs
TOUR DE FRANCE legends
Chris Froome and Geraint
Thomas were in shock last
night after their Team Ineos
sporting director Nico
Portal died suddenly at 40.
Frenchman Portal was a
strategic architect of
Froome’s four yellow
Jerseys, Thomas riding to
glory in 2018 and Egan

Bernal’s triumph last year.
He died at home in Andorra
from a suspected heart
attack, casting a huge
shadow over the team’s
build-up to Le Tour.
In a statement, Team
Ineos said: “We are all
overcome with grief. RIP
Nico – your spirit will always
be with us on the road and
forever in our hearts.”

Warrington boss Price shocked

Widdop & Austin omitted from

Wane’s first England get-together

WARRINGtON coach Steve
Price says he is shocked by the
omission of Gareth Widdop and
Blake Austin from Shaun
Wane’s first england selection.
Wane has invited 31 domesti-
cally-based players to a meeting at
Old Trafford this month ahead of
the Ashes series this autumn.
A further eight from Australia’s
NRL have been placed on a “watch
list” for this season.
Wane has been keen to stress
this is not a formal squad and the
door remains open for all players.
But Wolves coach Price, who has
eight other players in the group,
admitted he didn’t expect to see
Widdop or Austin overlooked.
Widdop has been a regular for
his country since his debut in 2010
but has been hampered by injuries
over the last 12 months, while
Australian-born stand-
off Austin featured
on the wing for
Great Britain in
2019.
Price (left)
said: “I was very
surprised. Gareth
has been really
consistent for his
country.”
O n Au st i n ,
Price said:
“With the
limited opportu-
nities he got last
year he’s another one who
put the team and the country first.”
Other notable absentees include
another Australian-born half-back
in Steve Prescott Man of Steel
Jackson Hastings, Hull FC’s Jake
Connor and Wane’s old Wigan
captain, Sean O’Loughlin.
But there were invites for Hull
centre Josh Griffin, Castleford
hooker Paul McShane and
Leeds youngster Harry
Newman.
Wane said: “The door is
never closed and outstanding
form will be rewarded.”
■Warrington’s Matty Ashton faces
up to five months out with a
hamstring tear.
