Albion floored as two-goal

Almiron fires up Newcastle

back-up keeper Jonathan
Bond pushed the ball on to
him trying to deal with Saint-
Maximin’s 47th-minute
centre.
West Brom staged a
desperate attempt to get back
into it in the final 20 minutes
and caused a few moments of
panic, especially when
Phillips clawed one back in
the 74th minute when his
shot flew in off the underside
of the bar.
Then Fabian Schar
managed to scramble away a
goal-bound Phillips effort
before substitute Zohore
grabbed a late consolation
when he tapped home with
seconds left.

causing all sorts of problems
for the home side and
eventually created the
breakthrough in the 33rd
minute with a superb piece of
creative play.
Minutes after rattling the
post, Saint-Maximin sent
Almiron through and he
drew the keeper before
curling a left-foot shot into
the bottom corner of
the net to give the
visitors the lead.
Then Almiron
gave the 5,000
travelling fans real
cause to think the
long journey was
worthwhile on the
stroke of half-time when he
stuck a great finish at the end
of a penetrating move.
Lazaro carved the Baggies
open down the right flank,
the ball dropped to Joelinton,
who put the ball into
Almiron’s path with a clever
back heel and the Paraguayan
fired another left-foot shot
into the roof of the net.
Next it was Lazaro’s turn,
though he was fortunate that

unusually comfortable. Still,
they couldn’t stop themselves
giving their fans the jitters as
they survived an Albion
onslaught in the last 20
minutes which threatened to
make all their hard work
count for nothing.
Late goals from Matt
Phillips and Kenneth Zohore
had Newcastle reeling, but
they dug deep to hold
on.
For Toon boss
Bruce (right) it
proved welcome
respite from an
alarming slide in
the league where
they haven’t even
scored in four games and find
themselves just five points
clear of the drop zone.
West Brom made a
sweeping 11 changes –
though it must be said that in
Gareth Barry, Chris Brunt,
Kieran Gibbs and Charlie
Austin they picked four
players with just shy of 1,500
League appearances between
them.
Allan Saint-Maximin was

n ewCastle have every
right to think the fa Cup
gods are smiling on them
again as steve Bruce’s
side clinched a quarter-
final spot.
The Geordies have not
been able to buy a goal of late,
but suddenly their dismal
Premier League form went
out of the window.
If you believe in fate then
there is an ominous ring
about this result.
This was the fifth FA Cup
meeting between these two
grand old clubs and all have
been at The Hawthorns.
Newcastle had only won
once – back in 1974 – when
they ended up going all the
way to Wembley.
And Miguel Almiron
certainly seems to like the
competition – his double
making it four FA Cup goals.
The £21million midfielder
struck twice in the first half
and when Valentino Lazaro
was gifted Newcastle’s third
straight after the break it was
suddenly all looking
