TESTED Kea parrot

Parrots enjoy

a flutter just

like humans

PARROTS can gamble and
make decisions based on
probabilities just like us,
researchers found.
They discovered the kea,
a type of parrot from New
Zealand, predicts events
based on previous knowl-
edge or experience.
Six keas were trained to
associate the colour black
with a treat and orange
with no reward.
They were then shown
two jars of mixed tokens,
one with more black than
orange and vice versa.
Next a researcher pulled
out a token from each jar
and hid it in their fist.
The keas consistently
chose the hand which
reached into the jar with
the most black tokens.
Auckland University’s
Amalia Bastos, who led the
study, said: “Kea’s behave
very intelligently.”

POPULAR Jolly Fisherman

Skeggy icon

bracing for

end of an era

SKEGNESS could retire its
iconic Jolly Fisherman over
health and safety concerns.
The character, slogan
“Skegness is so bracing”,
was created in 1908 to
promote the seaside resort
in East Lindsey, Lincs.
And locals still wear the
Jolly costume to welcome
visitors and attend events.
But they can only be in it
for 20 minutes before
taking a 20-minute break.
They must also have a
minder present, with both
having had police checks.
Hygiene fears have been
raised about sharing the
kit and the town council
has struggled to find
storage space for it.
A report said: “The
resource and cost of oper-
ating Jolly is more than
many will imagine.”
Councillors will decide
on Jolly’s future tonight.
