A

s the trend for slow travel continues to pick
up pace, knowing how to take a languid,
luxuriously long train journey is fast
becoming an art in itself. Take model Binx
Walton and Vogue’s fashion editor-at-large Julia Sarr-
Jamois, who boarded Belmond’s Eastern & Oriental
Express this month to capture the historic locomotive’s
magic. Over five days, they travelled from Bangkok
through Thailand and Malaysia before coming to a
stop in Singapore. How to do it right? A statement
trunk aside, hot days called for easy glamour, as the
team visited artisans in Penang, spotted rare butterflies
in the Janda Baik rainforest, shopped the markets of
Malacca and relaxed by the waters
of the Gulf of Siam. After dark, silk
and sparkles perfectly heightened
the romance of the train’s fabled
cocktail hour. Amel Mukhtar
