IT MAY SEEM AN OBVIOUS notion that
innovation and design go hand-in-hand, but throw in
the need for sustainability and the world’s creators really
need to get their thinking caps on. Global change for
long-term good is not just a here-today-gone-tomorrow
flash trend. So, with this eco-conscious theme in mind,
we were impressed with BMW’s commitment to
redesigning its products both inside and out. The woman
in charge of this weighty task? Daniela Bohlinger,
BMW’s head of sustainable design.
Like all pioneers dedicated to making global change,
she believes in a major shift from being “less bad” to
“fully aware and responsible”. “Sustainable design seeks
new answers. We found them by questioning everything,”
says the focused Bohlinger. And by everything she means
down to the finest of design details. In the fully electric
BMW i3, the list of recycled fabrics and materials is
beyond inspiring. Yarn is spun from natural-plant fibres
such as wool and hemp, wood panelling is certifiably
sustainable and dozens of plastic bottles are recycled
into every car. All of this coupled with a consistent
increase in electric mobility across the full stable of
BMW cars really shows the brand’s dedication to
innovation. It’s time to jump on board, the future of
travel is in practiced hands...
