the structure, and the accessories and finish. Many specifica-
tions will enumerate industry standards that must be met for
strength and for the type of steel used in the joists, erection
and attachment techniques, and finishes. Read the standards
carefully. Accessories that may be specified are bridging, ceil-
ing extensions, masonry wall anchors, bridging anchors, and
header angles.

Estimating. Because structural metal is sold by the
pound, the total number of pounds required must be deter-
mined. First, take off the linear feet of each different type of

joist required. Then multiply the lineal footage of each type

times the weight per foot to determine the total weight of

each separate type. Also, estimate the accessories required—

both their type and the number needed.

If the contractor is to erect the joists, an equipment list,

costs, and the labor hours are required. On small jobs, it is

not unusual for the contractor to use his own forces to set

the joists. Remember that all accessories must also be

installed. If the joist erection is to be subcontracted, the gen-

eral contractor’s responsibilities must be defined, as well as

who will install the accessories.
