COUNTRY IN THE CITY
As hard as it may be to believe, this gorgeous rustic garden is not deep in the British countryside but rather slap bang
in the centre of the capital, just minutes from the City of London. These are the gardens of the Charterhouse and they
form part of a seven-acre site that dates back to 1348 during the time of the Black Death.
The Charterhouse was originally a Carthusian monastery, before becoming a Tudor home and a private school.
For the last 400 years, it has also been home to almshouses, where the resident Brothers continue to live and work
today. After opening to the public three years ago, the Charterhouse now stages combined House and Garden Tours
on select dates in 2020, as well as occasional Open Gardens evenings throughout the summer, which allow unguided
access to the once-private outdoor spaces and feature a temporary BBQ and bar to enjoy.
