Lather up those laces
The laces attract dust and
dirt that is not as easy to
simply wipe off. Remove to
soak them in soapy warm
water and, if white, add
a little stain remover then
put them in the washing
machine. Be sure to iron
the creases after.

Canvas shoes in crisis?
Here’s a genius cleaning
hack from Cat Mom
(@sarahtraceyy) on Twitter:
“Rinse shoes, mix 1:1.5 of
baking soda & detergent,
scrub w toothbrush, let it sit
for a while, rinse, put in
washer, baby powder/dry.”

Finishing touches
Once clean and dry, you
can condition the leather by
applying some Carnauba
cream, which is a natural
protective wax finish that will
resist finger marks and scuffs.
A little goes a long way – just
ensure you buff with a clean
cloth to avoid streak marks.
Do not use this on suede
or nubuck.

Spray & put away
Store them well when
they aren’t being used

  • but ensure they’re
    clean before you put
    them away; maybe
    use a shoe deodoriser
    or a dryer sheet for
    any lingering odours.

Fill your boots (or trainers)
If they are wet from inevitable
rain, stuff your trainers with a
small towel or face cloth to help
absorb moisture and retain
shape. Then leave them to dry
in a well-ventilated area – do
not put them next to artificial
heat, such as a radiator. Take
the stuffing out after 24 hours
to avoid them getting musty.
