ANOTHER GOLDEN OLDIE
We asked you to think up a funny
caption for this photo.

Editor’s Note: Thanks for raising
this point. Our editorial approach
is to always adopt the plain and
ordinary meaning of words, guided
by the authority available to us in the
dictionary. The Oxford Dictionary
defines a decade as “a period of
ten years, especially a period such
as 1910-1919 or 1990-1999.” Using
a strict numerical or Gregorian
calendar reading, ie one to ten, does
lead to confusion and would result
in saying 1990 is actually part of the
1980s. So, we decided to settle on a
decade as starting with year zero and
not year one, or in this particular
case 2020-2029. But we cheerfully
acknowledge Steve Pearson’s point
and would be very interested to know
what other readers think about the
debate over ‘decade’ and its technical
versus cultural usage.
