remindedmeofa dayinDecember,
1952,whenI wasnineyearsoldand
livinginLondon.ThestreetwhereI
livedwasa T-shapedcul-de-sacand
a double-deckerbusdroveupour
streetbecausethedriverhadgotlost
inthefog.Withvisibilityonlyabout
onemetre,thebuscouldnotturn
aroundinournarrowstreet.Agroup
ofadultsandkidshelpedthebus
drivermakea three-pointturn
untilhewaspointedbackdownthe
streetandthenguided, withtorches,
