E

ven as the investigations
continue into how Man-
chester City’s squad was
funded, its ability to collect tro-
phies is undisputed.
Particularly the League Cup.
It’s only the secondary cup
competition, but it is the first
major piece of silverware handed
out each season in England. And
for the third consecutive season,
it was Pep Guardiola’s side pick-
ing it up at Wembley, thanks to a
2-1 victory over Aston Villa on
Sunday secured by first-half goals
from Sergio Aguero and Rodri.
Not since Liverpool in the
1980s has a hat trick of League
Cups been achieved. Liverpool
will prevent City achieving such a
three-peat in the Premier
League, with the top two separat-
ed by 22 points.
But City has Liverpool in its
sights for a bigger prize – deth-
roning them as Champions
League winners. It could be the
last opportunity before a two-
season ban from European com-

petition that is being challenged
in court by City lawyers.
The squad’s strength – the
most expensively assembled in
soccer history – was clear against
Villa at Wembley. Eight players
could be changed from a lineup
that beat Real Madrid 2-1 in the
Champions League last-16 first
leg on Wednesday and still see off
Villa, not with ease but comfort-
ably enough.
Aguero struck the opener after
20 minutes after Rodri’s cross
was headed into his path by Phil
Foden.
Rodri was on target himself
with a header on the half-hour
after Ilkay Gundogan swung in a
corner that should have actually
been a Villa goal kick.
A slip by John Stones allowed
Anwar El Ghazi to set up Mbwa-
na Samatta to pull one back in
the 41st.
It ensured City didn’t run away
with this game, but the strug-
gling Birmingham side could
find no way of forcing the game
to extra time.
For the fourth time in five sea-
sons, City lifted the League Cup.

PREMIER LEAGUE ACTION
Before the League Cup final, the
focus was on the race for Cham-
pions League qualification. City’s
European ban adds both intrigue

and uncertainty given the ap-
peal.
Fifth place will secure a place
in the elite competition if sec-
ond-place City can’t overturn the
punishment for breaching of UE-
FA financial regulations.
Manchester United will be
needing City to fail at the Court
of Arbitration for Sport, as it is in
fifth place and was held 1-1 at Ev-
erton on Sunday to sit three
points behind Chelsea.
United goalkeeper David de
Gea’s poor clearance allowed Do-
minic Calvert-Lewin to put Ever-
ton in front. Everton goalkeeper
Jordan Pickford was then at fault
for the equalizer with poor posi-
tioning allowing Bruno Fer-
nandes to net.
Calvert-Lewin was denied a
stoppage-winner winner when
VAR found Gylfi Sigurdsson to be
offside.
Wolverhampton is only be-
hind United on goal difference
after moving ahead of Totten-
ham with a 3-2 victory at the
north London club.
Tottenham threw away the
lead twice. Matt Doherty can-
celled out Steven Bergwijn’s
opener and Diogo Jota restored
parity after Serge Aurier restored
Tottenham’s lead. Raul Jimenez
grabbed the winner.

Nikola Jokic had 23 points, 18 rebounds and 11 assists for his
12th triple-double of the season to lead the Denver Nuggets
over the short-handed Toronto Raptors 133-118 on Sunday
night.
Jokic has 43 triple-doubles in his short career, completing
his latest by feeding Jerami Grant on a dunk that helped the
Nuggets pull away from the Raptors, who lost their third
straight.
Grant finished with 16 points for Denver, which had eight
players score in double figures.
Toronto played without Serge Ibaka and Fred VanVleet
for a second straight game, but got a career night from OG
Anunoby, who finished with 32 points on 12-of-16 shooting.
Denver hit its first nine three-
point attempts – five by Jamal
Murray, who had 17 of his 22
points in the first 12 minutes –
before Monte Morris missed with
1 minute 6 seconds left in the
first quarter. The Nuggets shot
63.6 per cent in the first quarter
and 60 per cent in the first half.
They hit 50 per cent from long
range and finished the game 56.6
per cent from the field.
Jokic had 10 points and 10 re-
bounds at halftime and was al-
ready three assists shy of a triple-
double.
The Raptors withstood the hot shooting to tie it at 60 in
the second quarter and trailed just 73-69 at intermission. It
was a two-point Denver lead late in the third quarter, but
the Nuggets opened up a 112-101 lead with 8:10 left in the
fourth.
Toronto twice cut the deficit to five points, but Denver
closed it out for the win. Jokic got his ninth assist on a
court-length pass to Gary Harris for a dunk midway through
the fourth.
Toronto’s next game is at Phoenix on Tuesday night.

MARIETTA, GA.Uruguayan international Leandro Leivas
scored two tries as the Toronto Arrows remained unbeaten
with a 28-18 win over Rugby ATL on Sunday in Major
League Rugby play.
The Arrows (4-0-0) have won their past 11 regular-season
games – the last seven in 2019 and the opening four this
year. The run was interrupted by a 30-17 semi-final playoff
loss to Seattle last June. Toronto and the San Diego Legion
(4-0-0) are the only still unbeaten teams this season.
Argentina’s Tomas de la Vega and Uruguay’s Gaston
Mieres also scored tries for Toronto, which got full value
from its South American contingent. New Zealand’s Sam
Malcolm added four conversions.
Alex Maughan and Neethling Gericke scored tries for
Rugby ATL (2-2-0), which led 11-7 at the half. Kurt Coleman
kicked two penalties and a conversion.
The Arrows had previously beaten Austin (38-10), Hous-
ton (27-22) and Seattle (39-17) to date this season. Rugby
ATL opened with wins over Utah (28-19) and New Orleans’s
NOLA Gold (22-10) before losing to Rugby United New York
(22-19). Toronto continues its string of away games next
Friday when it visits the Colorado Raptors (1-3-0), who
downed the Utah Warriors 22-14 Saturday. Because of the
Canadian winter, the Arrows’ home opener isn’t until April
4 against Utah.THE CANADIAN PRESS

WARRINGTON,ENGLANDThe Toronto Wolfpack’s tough
introduction to English rugby’s top tier continued on Sat-
urday. The Wolfpack dropped a 32-0 decision to reigning
Super League champion St. Helens to remain winless
through five games.
Toronto (0-5-0) has now faced the top five teams from
last year’s standings, with all five fixtures on the road. The
loss was Toronto’s most lopsided this season. It will look to
rebound ahead of its sixth-round clash against Leeds Rhi-
nos on Thursday. Leeds are coming off a 36-point win over
Warrington Wolves.THE CANADIAN PRESS
