FLATBREAD

48 Haymarket Terrace, EH12 5LA
http://www.ohmyflatbread.co.uk

As you walk through the door to Flatbread
Turkish Bakery House the aromas transport you
to another continent. Owner Kutlu
enthusiastically guides everyone through their
choice of Turkish specialities, freshly baked
breads and the bakery’s unique flatbreads with
amazing savoury toppings.
The chef made sure we were well looked after
with coffee that only a Turk can make and
explained why he had asked us there.
He said: “We know the cycle lane is a great
idea, but we need customers to know that
behind all the fences and noisy work we’re still
here, and please don’t forget about us.
“Come and try my Menemen eggs for
breakfast, you’ll love them.”
Fun fact? His grandfather Yusuf cycled to work
every day from around the age of 14 until he was

  1. He smoked 40 cigarettes a day - and lived to
    about 93.

PIZZOLOGIST
70 Haymarket terrace, EH125LQ
http://www.pizzologist.co.uk

This business is owned by three Italian friends
with head chef Federico at the wheel along with
Alberto (right). The Neapolitan pizza dough is
made in-house to their own recipe, spun into
shape when you order, and fired in the oven in
the time it takes to get your coat off and
check your phone for messages.
A cheeky sign outside issues a
bold claim “We make the best
pizza in Edinburgh – Test us!” We
accepted the challenge and
can’t remember the last time
we had a pizza this good.
Importantly, the base was
crisp with an edge of
golden bubbles – a sign of
a really hot oven and
great dough.
The menu reveals

toppings with carefully constructed
combinations of traditional and new modern
flavours. Of course they can deliver your pizza,
but you can’t beat sitting next to the kitchen
watching your dough being flung into a
sphere followed swiftly by the joy of eating
it while still steamily hot from the oven.
Federico said: “We are happy when
everybody is happy! And you can’t be
happy without pizza, right? The best
things in life come in circles.”

SANDWICH CULTURE
24 Haymarket Terrace, EH12 5JZ

There’s nothing like soup and
sandwich for a warming lunch on
colder days. This shop is run by
Donald Shek serving breakfast
and lunch with a traditionally
Scottish style menu offering
two freshly made soups every
day. Donald said: “I like to use
very fresh ingredients so I’m
up early each morning to
get the best and freshest
stuff from the market
because my customers
expect lots of choice and
variety. There is a real

community feeling round here with local
businesses and office workers who have
supported us for years.”

NAM VIETNAMESE RESTAURANT
46A Haymarket Terrace, EH12 5LA
http://www.linktr.ee/nam.restaurant

Jodie runs Nam Vietnamese Restaurant - one of
two Vietnamese food businesses on the Terrace

  • and her Mum Giang Tran who she says is both
her mentor and her inspiration runs the other.
Jodie said: “We love introducing our customers
to the flavours and cooking styles of Vietnam.
Our seasonal menu means you get to taste
something different every visit.” Both restaurants
are richly decorated with Vietnamese art which
Giang has collected over many years.
Walking through the door of Vietnam House
Gallery Café is the front room of the most
welcoming family in the world, with Giang Tran
the friendliest mothering hostess possible. Her
food is lovingly prepared and bursting with
flavour and you really do feel at home sitting on
the cushioned sofas surrounded by her collected
art. She chides customers who do not want to
have second helpings. A visit here is a genuinely
heart warming experience to soothe the soul.
“Come back soon” Giang shouts as we leave.
We will and next time we’ll bring all the family.

A tasty business

We love the area and we can’t wait to

have the new cycle path finished and get

tables on the street for an al fresco vibe
