Science Notebooks in Middle School
To make it easy for new FOSS teachers to implement a beginning
student notebook, Delta Education sells copies of the printed FOSS
Science Notebook in English for all FOSS middle school courses.
Electronic versions of the notebook sheets can be downloaded free of
charge at http://www.FOSSweb.com.
Each FOSS Science Notebook is a bound set of the notebook sheets for
the course plus extra blank sheets throughout the notebook for students
to write focus or inquiry questions, record and organize data, make
sense of their thinking, and write summaries. There are also blank pages
at the end to develop an index of science vocabulary.
The questions, statements, and graphic organizers on the notebook
sheets provide guidance for students and scaff olding for teachers. When
the notebook sheets are organized as a series, they constitute a highly
structured precursor to an autonomously generated science notebook.
