successful business has to
balance two different time
horizons: short-term and
long-term. In the short term, a
company needs cash to pay its wages
and bills. But if it focuses too much on
the immedate present, it risks
missing opportunities. Conversely, if

a company’s sole focus is on new
prospects, it will soon become
unprofitable. As Jack Welch, CEO of
GE, said: “You can’t grow long-term
if you can’t eat short-term. Anybody
can manage short. Anybody can
manage long. Balancing those two
things is what management is.”
