In (10), ones is (premodified) plural and cannot be structurally translated by a form
of the singular ein-. The alternative chosen in the published translation keine +
imaginären is an ellipsis of Wissenschaften. As shown in the constructed variants
(10a), the combination of keine with a postmodifying relative clause would be
grammatically correct, though still a case of ellipsis, and a textually unmotivated
information structure:
(10a) ... hieb- und stichfeste Wissenschaften, wir brauchen keine 0 , die imaginär

The German positive plural parallel to English ones would have to be welche, once
more heavy and over-focusing in terms of information structure, although here
we would at least have an unambiguous case of substitution:
(10b) Wir brauchen nicht welche, die imaginär sind.
Another way to compensate for non-available nominal substitution in German is
to use lexical cohesion plus demonstrative reference instead of substitution:
(11) They must cross this river – and two others as well, when they meet them,
though they do not yet know that those exist. As they did not know of this

While English (11) has two cases of substitution, German (11) has none: andere
is an ellipsis and diesem Fluß realizes demonstrative reference plus lexical cohe-
sion. Thus the cohesive relationships are preserved semantically, yet with different
cohesive devices.

Quite often both languages employ comparative particles (rather, statt) to explici-
tate the comparative function.
