and two very close family members or friends serve as the
padrinos de bautismo (godparents). Following the church
service, all guests proceed to the family’s home for a long
lunch or tea. Gifts are given that may be religious in nature
or not. In rural areas, however, the baptism of a newborn
can be a much more elaborate affair. The event can last the
entire day, beginning with an asado. The food and drinks are
abundant and the atmosphere is festive.
In the past, gifts were never given before the birth of the
child. (This practice was a hold over from the days when a
newborn’s chance of survival was less assured.) Only recently
have baby showers started to catch on in Chile. However, if
a friend or close acquaintance is pregnant and you are not
aware of any baby shower, you should wait until the baby is
born to give your gift.

First Communion


A child receives his or her First Communion around the age
of eight. The child is guided by padrinos de comunión, close
friends or family members chosen by the parents. Boys dress
up in suits and girls wear white dresses with veils. Following
the church service lunch or tea is served at the family’s home
and gifts are given. Once again they may be religious in
nature or not. Many children receive their First Communion
on 8 December, the Feast of the Immaculate Conception.

Birthdays


Chileans celebrate birthdays with parties or small family
gatherings. Young children normally will be given parties
at home with cousins and/or friends. However, with the
growing number of fast food outlets, children’s parties are
increasingly held at McDonald’s, Chuck E. Cheese (a pizza
parlour with games and shows for children) or some similar
venue. Adults usually celebrate at someone’s home. Gifts are
opened during the party after the cake is cut. If attending a
birthday party for an adult, always bring a gift, even if it is
just a small token. When the host dims the lights you know
it’s time for the cake to be brought out. Everyone sings the
Chilean version of Happy Birthday. So that you can sing along,
