For those living in Santiago who enjoy working out, it might just
be healthier to do so indoors due to the smog. A few people use
masks when riding bikes or jogging, but you will not see the
average citizen wearing masks on the street. Those who can,
leave the city on weekends. Once out of Santiago the air is clean
and fresh, especially along the coast.

Anti-Pollution Measures


You may be surprised to learn that the situation is much better
than it was during the 1980s! The government has instituted
a number of pollution fighting measures. The increased
use of alternative energy, the closing of factories within the
Santiago metropolitan area and the recent introduction of
