Airport Shuttles
When arriving at the airport in Santiago there are a number
of options to get to the city, about a 30-minute drive away.
Airport taxis are available and charge a fixed rate. A coupon
must be purchased from the taxi counter beforehand. A
cheaper alternative is a Transfer. This is a minivan that
takes about four people to different destinations within the
same part of Santiago. This service is provided by both the
Chilean airlines and private companies. The ticket is also
purchased at the company’s counter located on the arrival
level. You must tell them what part of Santiago you are going
to and they will tell you which van to board. If you are the
first to be dropped off, it’s as quick as a taxi, if you are the
last, it’s about 15 minutes longer. The cheapest way to get
into the city is to take an airport bus that will drop you off
at either the Los Heroes Metro stop, or at a bus terminal
downtown. If you need a ride to the airport all three forms of
transportation are readily available in the opposite direction.
Airport taxis are available at most large hotels. Any regular
taxi will also take you to the airport, but some will most
likely want to negotiate a fixed price beforehand. If you
have a clear understanding of the value of Chilean currency
you can negotiate a good price. The taxi drivers will try to
make money, but will not try to rob you blind.
Colectivos
Colectivos look exactly like the black and yellow cabs but have
a sign and number plate on top of the roof. These cars run
predetermined routes and pick up as many passengers as
will fit into the car. The cost is maybe double that of a bus,
but far cheaper than a private taxi.
EDUCATION
Overall, Chile has a good education system. Not surprisingly,
private schools have the best test scores. The government
continues to reform the public school system. There
