A HOMOGENEOUS SOCIETY


The first thing you may notice about Chilean society is that
it is very homogeneous. Physically, Chileans resemble one
another and look, for the most part, like one people. Minority
groups have either immersed themselves in the dominant
culture or have maintained their differences while remaining
on the edge of mainstream society. Chileans generally regard
themselves as one people, not a nation of diverse populations.
Recent arrivals, due to their physical traits, clothing and
behaviour, will have a hard time blending in. However, any
attention expatriates attract will never be hostile.

Sebastian Piñera
In 2010, wealthy businessman Sebastian Piñera assumed the
Presidency. As a leader of the Renovación Nacional (National
Renewal) political party, he became the candidate of the right-wing
Coalition for Change which brought together five political parties and
Independents. His election brought about an end to the center-left
coalition’s 20 year hold on the office.

Ethnicity


Upon arriving in Chile, most people are struck by the fact
that the population seems so ‘European’. In contrast to
their northern neighbours Peru and Bolivia, Chileans have
a high percentage of European blood. Many Chileans could
probably be classified as mestizo. Yet, although they may
