you be expected to bring a portion of the meal. The same
small gifts mentioned earlier can be given to the hostess. If
you happen to be invited to once (afternoon tea), it would

Greetings

When greeting or taking their leave of each other Chilean
women will kiss each other once on the right cheek. Men
and women do the same when arriving or leaving. Men
shake hands with each other, although close friends may
shake hands and embrace (un abrazo). These greetings are
common only in social situations and may not be appropriate
in business settings depending upon the relationship. Even if
there are 20 people at the party, Chileans will still make the
rounds greeting everyone individually. Only when attending
a very large, noisy party will you be exempt from doing so.

In Chile, it is common for close friends greet each other with an abrazo.
