(a) FG 0 covers the period prior to 1978, the central work being Dik’s
dissertation (1968) on coordination;
(b) FG 1 covers 1978 to 1989, beginning with the publication of Func-
tional Grammar (Dik 1978a);
(c) FG 2 covers 1989 to 1997, beginning with the publication of The The-
ory of Functional Grammar (Dik 1989b);
(d) FG 3 covers 1997 to September 2000, beginning with the publication
of the two volumes of The Theory of Functional Grammar (Dik
1997a; 1997b);
(e) FG 4 extends from the ninth International Conference on Functional
Grammar (Madrid, Spain) onwards, where Hengeveld’s (2000)
Functional Discourse Grammar was first presented.

Figures 1 and 2 provide an overview of these five periods.^2
