In the last month, 11,000 citizens have signed the Citizens’ Brigade to Save LACMA
petition protesting the destruction of LACMA’s East Campus buildings and the
construction of the catastrophic Zumthor/Govan plan. 11,000 people believe that our
elected leaders and LACMA trustees have ignored the citizens to whom the museum
belongs, neither seeing the truth, hearing the truth, nor speaking it. But Angelenos
overwhelmingly oppose this bizarre plan, which squanders valuable land, reduces gallery
space by two-thirds, and no longer houses our cherished permanent collections. Floor
plans and detailed budgets have never been made public. And now comes the game-
changing recession, which weakens the museum’s financial position, heightening the
risk of default, making any thought of embarking on what will likely be a $1 billion dollar
project irresponsible and reckless. With the financial meltdown and new information
about the museum’s high and rising debt load, likely cost increases, and persistent
underfunding—plus the Ahmanson Foundation’s withdrawal of making further gifts of
art—we urge county, city and museum officials to reconsider this project and see and
hear 11,000 citizens speak the truth.
Stop this blunder. Rethink. Start over.
