SAVAGE’S BAKERY & DELI
2916 18th St. S., Homewood, Alabama
shopsavagesbakery.com
This roundup wouldn’t be complete without a shout-out to
the Bake from Scratch team’s very own hometown bakery.
Our test kitchen is just a short drive away from Savage’s, a
Birmingham, Alabama, area institution since 1939, located
in the quaint suburb of Homewood. What makes Savage’s
so special is that not much about it has changed since it
was fi rst opened, including the recipes. From buttercream-
covered layer cakes to their iconic smiley face cookies
and a famous Chocolate Roulage that’s served in some of
Birmingham’s top establishments, their baked goods have
stood the test of time. Go-tos include their Butterfl ake
Rolls (buttery pull-apart rolls that are perfect for dinner
parties), chocolate-dipped Lace Cookies, and take-home
tubs of their addicting buttercream frosting.
CROWD FAVORITE: if you know us, you know we’re
all about sweet rolls. That’s why our favorite order is the
Meltaways, sweet yeasted dough fi lled with everything from
jams to cream cheese and topped with crunchy streusel. •
