[ 28 ]The "real de a ocho": the international currency

imposed by the Spanish Empire for 3 centuries (and was a
model for the US dollar). Jorge Pérez Valery, BBC News
World, 5 February 2023. It was called the "Real de a ocho".
It was made largely from American silver and was the first
coin to be internationalised in modern history. It was minted
by the Spanish Empire in the mid- 16 th century, boosted by
the abundant wealth brought by the colonisation of the
Americas Even when the empire was in decline, it remained
one of the most competitive currencies in the world,
extending its dominance until the end of the 19 th century.

[ 29 ]History of the pound. It may come as a surprise to you,

but the pound sterling has been around for about 1200 years.
Its origin is a unit of account used by the Romans, and its
name derives from the Latin expression "libra pondo" ("a
pound of weight"), from whose capital "L" the symbol that
identifies the currency (£) was derived. The United Kingdom
still in fact weighs in pounds and ounces ("pounds",
abbreviated "lb", and "ounces", abbreviated "oz"), rather than
in kilos and grams, and this is perhaps one of the reasons for
the longevity of the British currency. Its use in England dates
back to the 8 th century, when it was equivalent to one pound
of silver (a huge Jeff Bezos-style fortune at the time). In 928
it was adopted as the national currency; at that time, one
pound could buy fifteen cows. In 1801 , when the United
Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland was
established, sterling became its official currency, and a few
years later its value was linked to that of gold for the first
time. Since then, like the United Kingdom itself, it has had
its ups and downs; when the British voted to leave the
European Union in 2016 , its value fell to a 30 - year low.
Scotland, meanwhile, has its own Scottish pound, although
curiously this has no "official" validity as long as the Bank of
England has to retain the equivalent value in English pounds
to back those notes. All the coins show the effigy of the
Queen on the obverse and another image on the reverse and
that is why when we want to make a decision and flip a coin
we say: "Heads or tails? The new £ 1 coin is polygonal, with
12 sides, to make it more difficult to counterfeit the previous
round coins. https://www.britishcouncil.es/blog/origen-e-

[ 23 ]Definition of ancient world. Portion of lands known

(though not necessarily explored) by the ancients, comprising
most of Europe, Asia and Africa. Also called the Old World.
It is contrasted with the term New World, by which America
and Oceania are known. From a temporal point of view, it
ends with the discovery of America. The ancient world is
characterized by great civilizations, the first originating in
North Africa and the Near East, such as Mesopotamia, Egypt,

[ 25 ]The Third Industrial Revolution is a process defined by

the changes that have taken place in sectors that are so
present in the daily lives of many people, such as
communications and energy. The Third Industrial Revolution
was a multipolar process, led by the United States, Japan and
the European Union. Its beginnings date back to the mid- 20 th
century. It is linked to the term "Information Society". There
is no consensus on a specific date to determine its end. This
concept was launched by the American sociologist and
economist Jeremy Rifkin. It was subsequently taken up and
endorsed by organizations and institutions such as, for
example, the European Parliament in 2006. It is based on the
confluence and complementarity of new communication and
energy technologies.
