Step 13: For the dancers in our scene,
we have a nice shot from Adobe
Stock. It helps that the subjects in
this image were shot on a white
background and mostly silhouetted
already. If you’d like to download
the low-res watermarked version of
this image to follow along, click this
link, log in with your Adobe ID, and
click the Save to Library button. Dou-
ble-click the image in the Libraries
panel (Window>Libraries) to open
it in Photoshop. To make it easier
to work with the image, increase
the resolution of the practice file.
(We normally don’t recommend
enlarging images, but this is only for
practice purposes.) Go to Image>
Image Size, turn on the Resample
checkbox, select Preserve Details
from the Resample drop-down
menu, set the Width to 2,400 pixels,
and click OK.
We just need to extract the sub-
jects from the white background.
In the past, with the background
being solid white, I would have used
a luminance-based selection, but
this is a good use of the Select Sub-
ject feature. Just go under the Select
menu and choose Subject. Done!
Well, almost.

Step 14: While Photoshop did a
good job selecting the subjects, it
did miss some areas around their
faces. That’s because the edge light -
ing in some areas is close to the
same brightness as the background.
Use the Lasso tool (L) while holding
the Shift key to add those missed
areas to the active selection. Be sure
to look closely at the rest of the selec-
tion to make sure no other areas
were missed.
