› › HOW TO

Step Nine: Place another instance
of the cracked concrete stock image
at the bottom of the working file.
In the Layers panel, drag it above
the Green Light layer, and clip it
to that layer by going to Layer>
Create Clipping Mask. Set the layer
blending mode to Multiply, and
press Command-L (PC: Ctrl-L) to
bring up the Levels dialog. Pull the
right-hand handle to meet the right-
side slope of the curve. The goal is
to make the light areas completely
white so they’re rendered invisible
by the blending mode. Click OK.
Press Command-T (PC: Ctrl-T) for
Free Transform, and scale and posi-
tion the cracks as you want. Press
Enter to commit the transformation.

Step 10: Rasterize the cracked layer
by going to Layer>Rasterize>Layer,
and then rename it “Cracks.” Drag
the Cracks layer to the Create a
New Layer icon (plus symbol) at
the bottom of the layers panel to
duplicate it (duplicating the layer
this way will keep the copy clipped
to the previous layer). Reposi-
tion the copy to a different place
on the model. Continue creating
these cracks to give the model an
aged crumbling statue appearance.
Because you rasterized the layer,
you can use the Eraser tool (E) to
remove cracks on the various layers
as needed.
