Park’s Hurricane
Ridge (nps.gov/
olym ), a spectacular

only open weekends,
so be sure to check
conditions first.)
From the visitor cen-
ter at 5,242 feet (get
your national park
passport stamped! ),
hike the 1-mile round-
trip High Ridge Trail
for views of glacier-
clad Mt. Olympus
and the Strait of Juan
de Fuca.

1 P.M. Mountain
treks work up an ap-
petite, so head back
into town for fish
tacos at the casual

miles west on U.S.

101 to witness the

magnificent 45-mile-

long Elwha River. Af-

ter the demolition of

two nearly century-

old dams, it flows

uninterrupted for the

first time in genera-

tions. If weather al-

lows, hunker down

at the river mouth for

a glorious sunset to

match the fall foliage.

7 P.M. Treat yourself

to Sequim Bay oys-

ters , smoked salmon

chowder , or grilled

halibut in the wood-

paneled dining rooms
