pring City, Utah: popula-
tion 1,000 plus 2 urban-
ites facing a bit of culture
shock. That’s the feeling
that sunk in when Shari and Randal Thatcher
waved good-bye to their Seattle high-rise five
years ago and moved into an 1875 stone house
in the Mormon pioneer town. “It was like we
went to Las Vegas, got drunk, and got married.
We thought, What have we done?” says Shari,
an avid gardener. (He’s a retired project man-
ager.) Their relocation to the burgeoning artist
community, however, meant that the couple
lived closer to their families and that they now
had a little piece of history to call home.
As an homage to the property’s past, the
previous owner had built and left behind
impeccably handcrafted furnishings, includ-
ing an ornate wood-carved dining-room table,
to match the house’s frontier aesthetic. But
after living with it for a few years, the Thatch-
ers realized the era-specific decor, though
lovely, was not representative of who they are.
Then Meta Coleman came knocking. The
stylist and interior decorator was scouting
