eattle’s Katie Hackworth is no stranger to reinvention. When she

took a hiatus from her graphic design career to spend time with

daughters Gracie and Sadie (now 13 and 11 ), she focused her cre-

ative energy on designing and building two houses —one right

after another —for her family. Hackworth found herself utterly

immersed in the process , absorbing all she could from her contrac-

tors and educating herself along the way. To her surprise, her first

forays into construction were met with overwhelming applause,

and in 2013, she opened her own design-build firm.

A Washington native , Hackworth nevertheless draws her in -

spi ration from European houses and New York City’s classic
