This book is intended to teach you about the science of
mindfully managing your emotions in order to reduce your
anxiety. In turn, this will help you change your relationship to
your fears and worries and ultimately help you confront your
anxiety. To accomplish this, we will provide you with several
science- based strategies that emphasize the use of both mind-
fulness and emotion regulation, with the ultimate goal of
helping you develop a more balanced and fulfilling life.


Overview of the Book


This book is based on two major psychotherapy tech-
niques—mindfulness and emotion regulation— for reduc-
ing your own symptoms of anxiety by mindfully regulating
your emotions. We will provide you with an integrated
model of mindfulness and emotion regulation for reducing
and managing your anxiety symptoms. To accomplish this,
we will rely on modern psychological science to inform you
about specific strategies that you can use to reduce your
symptoms of anxiety, increase your daily functioning, and
improve your quality of life. Although we recognize that the
science of emotions is constantly evolving, we will provide
you with skills and strategies based in well- grounded and
enduring research so that you can mindfully regulate your
emotions.
First, we will focus on the nature of anxiety and on the
integration of theory and application of mindfulness and
emotion regulation techniques. Then, we will review spe-
cific scientific principles and cutting- edge research on
evidence- based interventions and provide the rationale for
using self- directed techniques to outsmart your anxiety. By
