Rumours of Jordan Peele’s
involvement in a Candyman reboot
had been circling like a swarm of
bees, and happily it turns out that
the rumours are true.
Not only that, but the project
has already found itself a director:
Nia DaCosta, the filmmaker behind
crime drama Little Woods, starring
Tessa Thompson and Lily James.
Peele, the director of Get Out
and upcoming social horror-
thriller Us, is producing the
project through his Monkeypaw
Productions banner, with MGM
producing and financing the film,
and Universal handling domestic
theatrical distribution. Production is
expected to begin in spring 2019.
“The original was a landmark
film for black representation in
the horror genre,” Peele said in a
statement. “Alongside Night Of
The Living Dead, Candyman was

a major inspiration for me as a
filmmaker — and to have a bold
new talent like Nia at the helm of
this project is truly exciting.
“We are honoured to
bring the next chapter in
the Candyman canon to life and
eager to provide new audiences
with an entry point to Clive
Barker’s legend.”
The film is being described
as a “spiritual sequel” to
Candyman, and will return to the
neighbourhood where the legend
began: the now-gentrified area of
Chicago that was once home to the
Cabrini-Green housing projects.
However, it’s unclear whether or
not actor Tony Todd will be back
to reprise his iconic role. Hooks
crossed for yes.
The Candyman reboot will be in
cinemas on 12 June 2020.

the live-action remake of cowboy bebop
is heading to Netflix
We all lost our minds last year
when it was announced that a
live-action Cowboy Bebop TV
series was on the way, and we’re
doing the same again: it was
recently revealed that the show
will be setting up home at Netflix.
The streaming service is taking
the anime series about a rag-tag
band of cool inter-planetary
bounty hunters and bringing it to
life in full live-action glory. Netflix
seems very keen on it: it’s already
been given a ten-episode order.
Midnight radio’s Andre
Nemec, Josh Appelbaum, Jeff
Pinkner and Scott rosenberg will
be executive producers and Thor:
ragnarok writer Christopher yost
is at work on the first episode.
Original director Shinichiro
Watanabe will be a creative
consultant, and Sunrise’s yasuo
Miyakawa, Masayuki Ozaki,
and Shin Sasaki will executive
produce with Tetsu Fujimura and
Matthew Weinberg. However,
there’s currently no news
regarding casting or directors.
For those unfamiliar with the
original series, Cowboy Bebop
begins with Spike Spiegel and
Jet Black hunting for profitable
crooks in their ship Bebop.
They’re quickly joined by fellow
bounty hunter Faye Valentine,
hacker radical edward and data
dog Welsh Corgi ein.
The anime is a mix of noir
and sci-fi with a healthy dose of
deadpan wit and eccentricity. The
only bad thing is there are only
26 episodes and a movie.
Cowboy Bebop doesn’t yet have
an air date.
