UPDATE

Gold Fishing

TWO MONTHS after turning 18, attacker Maddie Musselman
helped the U.S. women win water polo gold at the 2016 Olympics
in Rio, finishing second on the team with 12 goals. UCLA’s
leading scorer when she appeared in the Feb. 13, 2017, edition of
Faces in the Crowd, she would go on to score 69 times that
season, a Bruins freshman record. Musselman added a fourth gold
medal before turning 22 when she led the U.S. to its third straight
world championship, in ’19. Now she’s taking a redshirt year to
train for her second Games, in Tokyo. “The first time around, I was
young and I was discovering who I was as a person,” says Musselman.
“It’s easier to vocalize and be vulnerable with my teammates now,
because I’m more comfortable with who I am.” —D.F.
