I get up and start drawing
breakfast right away. It
has refreshed my brain
in a way that a couple of
weeks on a poolside lounge
chair never could. Unlike
escaping into a pudgy
mystery novel and a piña
colada, my travel jour-
nal has cleared my mind,
refreshed my eyeballs, and
stockpiled a cache of lovely
and enduring memories.
I started to travel because
I draw instead of vice versa.
Drawing while traveling has
made me fall more deeply in
love with both, rekindled my
love of sketching and made the adventure of new destina-
tions something I look forward to and plan for years.

A UNIQUE VIEW
A few years ago, I wrote An Illustrated Journey, in which
I highlighted the travel sketchbooks of 50 artists in

one book. I discovered in interviewing people for the
project that to talk about art and travel is to talk about
life—to learn people’s stories and their loves.
Sketchbooks reveal that although we may travel to the
same points on the map, we’re each actually visiting very
different places. The pages show how our accumulated
experiences impact each of us differently and create
