thebeginning,I’dbuiltthecomposi-
tionwitha strongupwarddiagonal
fromthelowerleftuptotheupper
right,culminatingwiththebride.
I thenworkedtocounterthismove-
mentbyaddingmoreweighttothe
leftsideofthepainting.First,I tried
toaddmorecontrasttothepattern
andshapesontheleft,but—asthe
paintingwasnearingcompletion—
I addedthegirlcuttingthecake(see
finishedpaintingonthenextpages).
A VIEWOFTHEPROCESS
Earlierstatesofthepaintingremained
visibleasI workedthroughthese
paintingproblems,andtheaccumula-
tionofchangeslefta crustyand
complicatedsurface.I likethatthere’s
a recordoftheprocessthatwentinto
makingthepaintingthatremains
presentonitssurface.I’velearnedthat
thediscoveriesthathappenovertime
aremoreinterestingtomethanany
imageI couldhavepreconceivedand
executed.Thepaintingbecomesas
mucha recordofmyowninvestiga-
tionsasit isa finishedproduct.
